As a Peruvian living abroad, if there’s one day I look forward to during the year is Independence Day. It’s the one day we can connect with our community, listen to our music and especially eat our food. 

Peruvian Independence Day is celebrated on July 28th each year and marks the anniversary of Peru’s declaration of independence from Spanish rule in 1821. This national holiday is one of the most significant and festive events in Peru, featuring a variety of celebrations that reflect the country’s rich cultural heritage and historical significance. 

So, we needed to bring all that to Ireland. On the 27th of July, Peru Fusion Ireland organised a day full of Peruvian culture. The event started around 3:00pm with the emotional chants of the Peruvian National Anthem which was followed by some inspirational words from the new Peruvian Ambassador Jaime Cacho-Sousa. 

It was then followed by some traditional folklore dances. We couldn’t waste the opportunity to bring our own Inca and Coya to the celebration and they were the opening ceremony. This year, we wanted to show our culture in the different regions of the country: the coast, the highlands, and the Amazon! If you want to see more photos of the performances, click here.

But that was not all, as part of the event we organised games where people could take home bottles of Pisco, a Peruvian Hamper, Peruvian souvenirs and more! We went from a sing-along to a Dance-a-thon! We were delighted to see the participation of not only our fellow Peruvians but also many Irish people enjoying the amazing Peruvian culture.
